Madi Malone, a sixth-year senior at Auburn and two-time Southeastern Conference champion and All-American in the hammer throw as well as one of only two female athletes in collegiate history to earn All-America first-team honors four times in the indoor weight throw, joins DyeStat editor Erik Boal to discuss her return to Mike A. Myers Stadium in Austin, Texas, to compete June 8 at the NCAA Division 1 Outdoor Championships. Malone is one of two athletes, along with UCLA's Mayyi Mahama, who competed in the 2019 Division 1 final in Austin and is returning for this year's championship event. She also revisits competing March 30 at Mike A. Myers Stadium at the 95th Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays and becoming reacquainted with the hammer ring and the facility, in addition to winning the event with a throw of 224-7 (68.45m). Malone explains how significant it is for Auburn to have Erik Ebel, Kyle Brown and Kyle Moison all qualifying in the men's hammer throw to compete June 7, in addition to having women's teammate Maura Huwalt advancing in the javelin throw. She expresses gratitude for the support and guidance of Auburn throws coach Pat Ebel and his role as both a mentor and father figure throughout her career, in addition to her mother Pattie and all of her teammates. Malone shares how encouraged she is with her consistency this year and looks forward to surpassing her personal-best 228-6 (69.66m) in Austin, with the motivation to eclipse the 70-meter mark for the first time. She also reflects on the May 25 competition at the NCAA East Regional in Jacksonville and being able to qualify with a clutch third-round performance of 219-10 (67.00m) after fouling her first two throws. Malone analyzes the depth of the women's hammer throw throughout her career at Auburn, placing eighth at 227-1 (69.22m) at last year's Division 1 final at Hayward Field in Eugene, Ore., which featured the top two competitors in collegiate history in Camryn Rogers at Cal and Alyssa Wilson representing Texas State, and examining this year's field that includes a pair of 73-meter performers in Stephanie Ratcliffe from Harvard and Anna Purchase representing Cal. She also looks forward to the opportunity to compete in July at Hayward Field at the USATF Outdoor Championships, and the potential to collaborate in the area of sports science with Auburn professors after the conclusion of her collegiate career.
