Kennesaw State junior Sarah Hendrick, an NCAA Division 1 indoor All-American and a four-time Atlantic Sun Conference champion, joins DyeStat editor Erik Boal to discuss her unbeaten outdoor season and breakthrough year, including achieving the Olympic Trials qualifying standard in the 800 meters April 10 by clocking a lifetime-best 2:01.47 at the Crimson Tide Invitational in Tuscaloosa, Ala. Hendrick, a graduate of Allatoona High in Georgia, revisits her indoor-best 2:03.73 on Feb. 27 at the Atlantic Sun Championships, in addition to her 2:04.36 and eighth-place performance March 13 at the Division 1 Indoor Championships in Fayetteville, Ark., and the motivation that created for her to continue improvement and development during the spring season. She reflects on her prep career and focusing more on long sprints than middle distance, and her transition to being an elite 800 and 1,500 runner, along with competing for the Owls in cross country. Hendrick examines how beneficial running the mile indoors and 1,500 outdoors, including a 4:18.31 personal-best effort April 17 at Eastern Kentucky, has been to her success in the 800, where she is ranked among the top 10 collegiate competitors, along with being among the top 25 American athletes and top 40 global performers this year. She reminisces about her victory April 24 in the 800 at the Drake Relays, and her excitement for competing on the Blue Oval at Jim Duncan Track, in addition to her respect for how much spectators and officials appreciate track and field and celebrate the winners at "America's Athletic Classic." Hendrick analyzes how much she has matured as a tactical racer since competing at the 2019 East Regionals in the 800, and how inspired she is to qualify for the Division 1 Outdoor Championship on June 9-12 at Hayward Field in Eugene, Ore., which would be the first of two trips to the venue, including the Olympic Trials, with the first round of the 800 scheduled for June 24. She also analyzes the depth of the event, with six sub-2:02 athletes alone competing in the East Regional in Jacksonville.
